The department "Environment protection and sewage treatment" was founded in 1980 by Academician K.S.Akhmedov of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the initiative of the Tashkent Polytechnic Institute at the faculty of chemistry and technology. From 1980 to 1991, Associate Professor Abduganiev B.M. headed this department. Since 1997, bachelors in the field of environmental protection have been trained. Since 1999, masters in the specialty 70710401 "Environmental Protection" are accepted. Since 2020 the head of the department is Associate Professor Igitov Farrukh Bakhtiyorovich. The department employs highly qualified teachers and researchers. During 2020 as a result of research work of scientists of the department with the help of the Agency for Intellectual Property of the Republic of Uzbekistan state patents for 5 inventions were received.

The professors and teachers of the department conduct lectures, practical, and laboratory classes for bachelor's and master's students on subjects such as "Ecology," "Ecology and Life Safety," "Industrial Ecology," as well as "Introduction to Specialization," "Contemporary Ecological Issues," "Fundamentals of Ecology," "Air Quality Engineering," "Environmental Chemistry," "Water Chemistry," "Ecological Monitoring," "Water Resources Engineering," "Environmental Protection in Industrial Sectors," "Ecological Expertise and Project Design," "Establishing a Closed Water Cycle System in Industry," and "Fundamentals of Toxicology."

Research work.
The scientific activity of the professors-teachers of the department is dedicated to conducting research in the following areas:
- Treatment of wastewater and industrial water using new polycondensation anionites
- Creation of composition of composite materials for cleaning products of the oil and gas industry based on local raw materials
- Obtaining cotton pulp from low-grade lint by creating technologies that ensure efficient use of water resources
- Disposal of Angren thermal power plant waste.
- Obtaining sorbent photocatalysts for the purpose of purifying water from heavy metal ions.
